Highlights from Miva Open University’s 2024 Matriculation Ceremony

The 2024 Miva Open University Matriculation Ceremony was a powerful statement on the future of education in Nigeria. From the dignitaries present to the inspiring words shared, every moment captured our unwavering commitment to providing flexible, accessible and quality education.

The event commenced with the National and University Anthems, a moment that grounded us all in the purpose of Miva Open University: to open doors for every Nigerian ready to learn, thrive, and excel. Our Vice Chancellor, Professor Tayo Arulogun, set the tone in his welcome address, expressing Miva’s core mission to make education not only flexible and accessible but a vibrant part of every student’s journey.

A memorable part of the morning was the address by the Chancellor, Sim Shagaya, where our leadership underscored the significance of Miva’s vision in the educational landscape. Miva’s modern approach to education, fueled by technology and community centres, redefines what’s possible for students.

Another significant part of the event was the induction of Professors of Practice—individuals who are renowned in their fields and bring extensive practical experience directly into Miva’s curriculum. We had the pleasure of welcoming some of Nigeria’s leading minds, including:

  • Sim Shagaya – Group CEO of The uLesson Group and Chancellor, Miva Open University
  • Uyi Akpata – Immediate past Country Senior Partner, PwC
  • Abubakar Suleiman – MD/CEO of Sterling Bank
  • Obadaare Peter Adewale – Founder and CVO, Digital Encode Limited
  • David Adejo Andrew – Immediate past Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education
  • Dr. Chukwudi Obinna Ekwueme – Chairman of UNICCON Group

Each of these esteemed individuals bring a wealth of knowledge and expertise that promises to elevate the learning experience for Miva students. The Professors of Practice represent the spirit of Miva—bridging the gap between theory and the demands of the modern workforce, equipping our students with critical, real-world skills.

Following the induction, the Registrar administered the Matriculation Oath. This ritual, brief yet profound, reminded students of the commitment they are making not only to themselves but to a broader educational mission that Miva champions. The Ag. Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC) then delivered a goodwill message, highlighting how the NUC continues to support institutions like Miva in breaking educational barriers and achieving quality standards.

The highlight of the ceremony was the keynote address delivered by His Excellency, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, SAN, GCON, Former Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. “Real success is leaving a lasting impact through your work, your contributions to society or the values that you’re able to impact on others. It’s about what endures beyond one’s immediate lifetime,” His message to our students was simple but profound and it was an inspiring moment that resonated with every attendee, leaving everyone motivated to take action.

In closing remarks, our Vice-Chancellor reiterated Miva’s commitment to supporting students with resources, flexibility, and a community that celebrates academic and personal growth. As the University Anthem and National Anthem played once more, it was clear that this matriculation wasn’t just a ceremony; it was the beginning of a journey for students who will help shape Nigeria’s future.

Our deep gratitude goes to our esteemed partners; Sterling Bank and FCMB, whose presence and support were instrumental in creating an enriching experience for our students. Together, we’re pushing the boundaries of education, making Miva Open University a true pioneer in accessible, impactful learning.
