In a momentous collaboration, Miva Open University hosted the National Privacy Week event, organized by the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) and facilitated by Switch Solutions Limited, on January 30th, 2024.
This year’s focus was the commendable Adopt-A-School mandate, designed to equip students at Nigerian tertiary institutions with data protection and privacy knowledge. Held at Miva Open University’s Abuja campus, 1059 O.P. Fingesi Road, Utako, Abuja, and streamed virtually, the event drew a diverse audience, including students and staff from Miva, NDPC personnel, and members of Switch Solutions Limited, a certified Data Protection Compliance Organization (DPCO). This unique blend of academic and industry expertise fostered a dynamic exchange of knowledge and collaboration opportunities.
During the Data Privacy Awareness Training, Ms. Rita Obinabo emphasized the importance of being careful about how we share information about ourselves online. We post billions of data points, often without realizing how that data is actually used.
The training also covered important information about data controllers in Nigeria, privacy awareness, data privacy and protection, rights as a data subject, and ways to protect your online privacy. The students had the opportunity to ask questions and get more information on data privacy.
The National Privacy Week event at Miva Open University underscored the crucial role of instilling data protection awareness. By building partnerships between educational institutions and regulatory bodies, Miva Open University continues to play a pivotal role in shaping a privacy-conscious generation equipped to navigate the complexities of the digital age.
