About the Speaker:
Dr. Zainab Shinkafi-Bagudu is a dedicated pediatrician and women’s health advocate, particularly focused on female cancers. She earned her Bachelor of Medicine (MBBS) from Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria, Nigeria, and further specialized in Pediatrics and Neonatology in the UK. On returning to Northern Nigeria, she identified a significant gap in access to diagnostic services for both clinicians and patients. This led her to co-found Medicaid Radio-Diagnostics & Clinics in Abuja in 2009, providing advanced diagnostic services like CT scans, MRIs, digital x-rays, and molecular laboratory tests for the first time in the private sector.
Realizing the severe lack of cancer awareness and care, Dr. Bagudu established the Medicaid Cancer Foundation (MCF) to promote cancer awareness, healthy lifestyles, and improve access to diagnostic and treatment services. The MCF operates on four pillars: Outreach, Advocacy and Awareness, Capacity Building, and Access to Treatment, raising over $2.5 million to fill gaps in cancer care. Her commitment to this cause has seen her advocacy extend to the global stage.
In 2018, Dr. Bagudu was elected to the board of the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC), using this platform to advocate for significant changes in cancer care, including the introduction of the single-dose HPV vaccine in Nigeria in 2023. She also chairs the First Ladies Against Cancer (FLAC) initiative, working with Nigerian governors’ spouses on health issues, and participates in several high-level committees such as the Bill and Melinda Gates funded CHIC program for HPV vaccine and WHO’s Global Breast Cancer Initiative.
As the First Lady of Kebbi State from 2015 to 2023, Dr. Bagudu championed girl child education, women empowerment, and immunization. Her notable achievements include launching the Kebbi State Cancer Control Plan, establishing the Kebbi State Cancer Registry, and creating a treatment fund for indigent patients. Outside her professional work, she is a devoted grandmother and enjoys nature walks.
